Green Team Vision Statement

The Cottage City Green Team works with our neighbors and Town staff to make our Town greener and healthier.

Through our projects and programs the community is recycling, gardening, installing solar panels, reducing waste and managing stormwater runoff.

The Cottage City residents and youth are working together to build a strong and vibrant Town through the Cottage City Community Garden; family - friendly events; and Anacostia River/Duleing Creek clean-ups. Join us and build a better community.

We are united in our diversity.

Cottage City Receives Prestigious Sustainable Maryland Certified Award

The Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland recertified Cottage City with a Sustainable Maryland Award.

Highlights of Cottage City’s accomplishments include:

  • The Town decreased its reliance on fossil fuels in 2020 by purchasing its first full-size electric vehicle. Through a grant with the Maryland Smart Energy Communities Grant program, the Town purchased a Nissan LEAF electric vehicle, which is used by the Code Compliance officer.

  • Expanded the Cottage City community garden to include a beehive to support pollinators and the local production of food.

  • Transitioned three municipal gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.

“The Town of Cottage City gratefully accepts this re-designation as a Sustainable Maryland community,” said Town Manager Consuella Barbour.  “This award represents our deep commitment to addressing the many environmental challenges of our time. We would like to recognize the Green Team, elected officials, and municipal staff that are working hard every day to ensure a sustainable future for our community, our state, and our planet.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Maryland program.

According to Mike Hunninghake, Program Manager for Sustainable Maryland, “During the first 10 years of the Sustainable Maryland program, if we have learned anything, it’s that reducing our footprint on where we live, be it a town, a county, a state or the planet, is vital to our continuation as a species. The work being done at the local level forms a foundation, by example and by action, for upward pressure on governments at all levels to take action to make our communities greener, cleaner and more resilient.”
