About the Town

Cottage City lies on the banks of the Anacostia River and across from the Historic Bladensburg Waterfront Park. The Anacostia Heritage Trail runs through the town and the trail is perfect for walkers and bikers. This is a true gem in the community connecting you to 50 miles of trails throughout Prince George’s County and Washington DC. There are many ways for walkers, bikers, and boaters to enjoy our natural resources and have fun. Being part of our country’s history is paramount – the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail starts here.
Explore the History of Our River
Cottage City lies at the headwaters of the historic Anacostia River. It is a tidal river so you will find the waters flowing or still. It runs 8.7 miles, from Cottage City into Washington, DC.
The name "Anacostia" comes from the name of a Nacochtank Native Americans settlement along the Anacostia River. Captain John Smith explored the area in 1608, traveling up the "Eastern Branch"—later the Anacostia River—mistaking it for the main body of the Potomac River, and he met the Anacostans.
A historic issue facing the Anacostia River has been the sewage that enters the river and its tributaries. During rainstorms, the river receives discharges due to the city's antiquated combined sewer system. This creates a public health threat and impairs water quality and leads to large fish kills.
NOT ANYMORE – after years of public outcry – work is being done to replace the infrastructure and the goal is to achieve a swimmable and fishable river by 2025!
The Historic Bladensburg Waterfront Park is across the river and houses Port Towns Community Boathouse, home to public boat and bike rentals, a public boat ramp/dock, and home to rowing crews from University of Maryland, Catholic University of America, a community rowing school, and area high schools.
The recently opened Anacostia River Trail is for cyclists and walkers and runs from the park/Cottage City to downtown Washington DC. It is a beautiful trail that runs along the river, through the Aquatic Gardens along lush forests and wetlands. It has become a popular trail for commuters and recreation.

Sustainable Maryland Certification

Cottage City was certified as a Sustainable Maryland town in 2018 for our efforts to become a more sustainable community. Through the work with Sustainable Maryland we hope to continue our pursuit of becoming a model green community.

Our Green Team
Following the lead of our sister towns in Maryland, the
people of Cottage City started a Green Team
representing residents of the town to address the issues
of improving the community. The team pursued
certification under Sustainable Maryland and was
recertified in November 2024. The Green Team meets
the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM at the town
hall to launch, manage and educate about the ways we
are greening our town. Bring your ideas - all are welcome.
We also participate in sharing news, resources, and events across the sustainability spectrum in Maryland.

More about our certification under Sustainable Maryland: It is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Sponsors include the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Maryland Municipal League.
